My wife and I just got back from staying at GN over a 3 day weekend. I had never stayed downtown before and wanted to give it a try. I will say the GN is by far the best hotel downtown. Check in was a breeze at about 4 p.m. No line. We stayed in the south tower. A bit to my surprise the rooms were not very big. The bathroom didn't have so much as a counter to put anything on. The toliet didn't work very well, had to hold the handle down. The shower was a joke. The shower head came up to my shoulders and i am average height. Never seen that before. The room was very quiet though, and the bed was good. For some reason they have very small pillows though. Odd. The rest of the hotel was great. Good sportsbook. Nice casino. It is smaller and laid out better than most of the strip hotels, easy to navigate. All the service we encountered was friendly and helpful. Good location downtown right in the middle of everything. Close to bus to the strip. 2$.Though the GN didn't have many 5$ tables or good slot machines, the rest of downtown is great for gambling. Good pay tables on the video poker and plenty of 2-5$ tables. Spent a lot of time gambling at the Four Queens. The Plaza has a good coupon book and is good for gambling also. Bottom line if you are on a budget downtown is much better. Just jump the bus and visit the strip. Not much else to do otherwise downtown, but i went this trip to gamble.I was looking forward to seeing the lights at the Fremont St exprience. I must say, to my surprise, i thought it was lame. I took one look up and said big deal and never payed attention to it again. Don't understand why people think this is so great. The time share people downtown are a little annoying, but no big deal.I would recommend staying downtown if you are on a budget and want to try something different. That said, the GN is the best place to stay. I will probably stay downtown again, since i don't like 10-15$ blackjack tables and low paying slots. There is a lot more to do and see on the strip however. In my opinion don't stay downtown for the Fremont St. experience, it isnt worth it. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me.
This is a quality hotel and seemed to be by far the best of the downtown hotels. We got a good price staying here so we were a little apprehensive about what to expect. However, check-in was efficient, the room (in varying shades of brown) very well appointed, with good qulity fittings. The buffet queues were 20-30 minutes-ish, but given the quality of the decor and food in the dining room (the champagne Sunday Brunch at $12.75 was unbeatable), this was not surprising. We wandered into most of the other downtown hotels and none came close to the Golden Nugget. We would be happy to recommend it to anyone visiting LV. Incidentally, although we stayed longer on the Strip, we decided to stay one night downtown, so that we could sample the Fremont Street Experience and this worked out just great.
We stayed there at the GN for two nights because we had booked in advance, but soon regretted the fact; being used to simple but warm and comfortable lodging, we felt totally out of place in this noble, expensive, but - sorry to say so - totally boring hotel. The fact that we had booked a non-smoking room that turned out not to be available when we arrived, and that we were forced to spend two nights inhaling cold smoke without getting at least some kind of compensation, added to our frustration. Shold we ever come to Vegas again (which I sincerely hope), we will choose something less luxurious but more comfortable. But this is only my humble opinion, and others are free to share it or not :-).
I stayed at the Golden Nugget for the first time this past week. My two previous trips I've stayed at the Luxor and we stayed at the Aladdin on this trip as well. I have to say the Golden Nugget is a step above the Luxor, but really couldn't compare to the Aladdin. Service was backed up, but friendly at the check-in desk. The rooms were nice, once you considered how old they are. Our rooms were in the south tower, just about as far from the elevator as you could get. I didn't care too much for this walk. The hotel is definitely the nicest one downtown, which may not be saying much. For the price (50.00) you can't beat it, especially if you consider staying elsewhere downtown. At the Aladdin, there was no noise evident in the rooms, but this was not the issue at the Golden Nugget. I could hear the sirens outside, the people in the hallway and they were washing windows to boot. All in all, it's probably by far the nicest downtown. I would recommend it if that's where you're interested in staying.
I just returned from a 3 night stay at the Golden Nugget, and I have nothing but praise for this hotel. The service was fast and friendly, and our room was superb. We had a room with two beds in the South Tower which was very well-appointed and our floor was so quiet and restful after spending hours in the casino and lounge. Check in and check out was a breeze. The group Destiny that plays in The Lounge in the hotel is a must see. They are so talented and a treat to watch. There's a small dance floor that was crowded with couples eager to dance to the great music, which included songs by Lou Rawls, Santana, and a bit of reggae, just to mention a few. The casino is a lively place, and we had great luck. My traveling companion won $667 in the Golden Nugget casino playing the $1 slots. I won just over $200! We didn't get a chance to try the buffet because the line for the breakfast buffet was too long and we didn't want to wait that long to get in. We ate at the Garden Cafe twice, though, and the food and service were great. I would recommend this hotel if you want to stay in the downtown area of Las Vegas. It's a much different atmosphere downtown than on the strip, which was overly crowded and much more expensive. You get much more bang for your buck at the Golden Nugget. We attended one show on the strip called The Legends in the Imperial Palace hotel. I highly recommend the show. We enjoyed it thoroughly. I was also recommend you not go to the Outlet Mall located near downtown. It's a waste of time. I only have one complaint about the Golden Nugget, and that is that the pool hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you want to swim early or late, you're out of luck. But it is a small but nice pool with lots of lounge chairs for sun bathing and you can rent a private cabana that has a small refrigerator. All in all, the Golden Nugget get an A+++ in my book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who has never stayed in downtown Las Vegas. My friend, who had always stayed on the strip, thoroughly enjoyed her stay at the Nugget and said she would definitely stay there again. Try it, you'll love it. |
